I had the pleasure of reading an advanced copy of Whiskey Business: A Mixology Lounge Mystery by Adrian Andover, and what a fantastic debut this turned out to be. From the very first page, it read like it was written by someone who’s been telling stories all their life.
Reece Parker is a protagonist you can’t help but root for. After a major life change, he pours his energy into opening Subplot, a literary-themed cocktail lounge, the kind of place I’d be a regular at if it were real. From menus disguised as books to carefully crafted cocktails, the details of the bar made the setting leap off the page.
When a murder takes place just outside Subplot, Reece is pulled into the mystery, not only to clear his name but also to protect the life he’s worked so hard to build. What impressed me most was how seamlessly the author wove together a compelling whodunit with Reece’s personal journey of growth, self-acceptance, and bravery.
The supporting cast of characters in Hope Mills felt warm, real, and easy to love, making me want to linger in this town. The pacing was spot-on, the mystery kept me guessing, and the heart of the story stayed with me long after I turned the final page.
This debut sets the bar high for what’s to come. I cannot wait to see what’s next for Reece and his circle of friends. Highly recommended for cozy mystery fans looking for a fresh, heartfelt twist on the genre.
